Loft 523 ReviewLocated in an old carriage and dry-goods warehouse, each of the 18 lofts is a marvel of modern design, sort of a Jetsons-futuristic-meets-NYC-minimalist fantasy. They are sleek and handsome, but those wanting plushy and overstuffed will be miserable as soon as they see the concrete floors. Beds are platforms, surprisingly comfortable with Frette linens (but just a chenille throw blanket over that; ask for the down comforters if the night brings a chill). The bathrooms are so big you could fit the entire Rebirth Brass Band inside. Check out that Agape "spoon" tub in the Loft Superior rooms -- which are somewhat larger than the Loft Deluxe Rooms. Both have dual showers. Yet throughout are reminders of the building's provenance -- old wood planks form the floor downstairs, turn-of-the-20th-century tin ceiling tiles outfit the elevators, and columns from the old warehouse decorate the lounge. Note that there may be some room service, but it's spotty -- the food comes from Rambla in the International House (its sister property) down the street. Both hotels donate unused bath amenities to Clean the World, which distributes them to impoverished countries and homeless shelters. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
