Review of Carousel Bar & LoungePiano music is featured here Wednesday through Saturday, but the real attraction is the bar itself -- it really is a carousel, and it really does revolve ("and has been since 1949!" said a justly proud employee). The music goes on until 2am (or simply "until" these days). But don't think of this as a cheesy place: It's really a great spot to step back in time and have a cocktail -- not a beer, of course, but a grown-up drink (with, unfortunately, grown-up prices, comparable to those found in New York City). A top choice for those not interested in Bourbon frat-party fun or even the young and the frenzied on Frenchmen Street. And if the bartender isn't busy or indifferent, they make a fine Sazerac, as well as their signature drink, the Vierre Carre Cocktail, created in the 1930s by the hotel's then-head bartender. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
