Review of Le Domaine de George Sand

At the Château de Nohant, known today as La Maison de George Sand, the novelist learned the ways and thoughts of the peasants. During her time here, she entertained some of the intellectual and artistic elite of Europe: Flaubert, Balzac, Delacroix, Liszt, and Gautier. The building, which its guides define as a maison bourgeoise, is in its own park. It was constructed of stone in 1763 and purchased in 1793 by the family of George Sand. Today, it houses mementos of Sand and her admirers and friends, with testimonials to the literary conceits and eccentricities of one of France's most enduringly famous writers. The only way to visit is on a 45-minute guided tour in French (non-French speakers can follow along with a printed text). You can see the boudoir where she wrote the novel Indiana, published when she was 28. You can also visit her bedchamber and study. At Nohant, George Sand staged theatricals, dramatizing several of her novels -- not very successfully, according to reports. Today, over 3 weekends in June, fêtes romantiques de Nohant are sometimes staged, with an impressive list of musical performers.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
