One of the best-preserved medieval castles in Holland, this place has had a colorful array of inhabitants over the centuries. It served as a nunnery and later as a depot for a manufacturer of washing machines. The foundation which now owns the castle has restored it and on the inside recreated the plain, austere atmosphere it would have had in the 14th century. Outside, a moat and four sturdy towers are connected to make a square, virtually impregnable building. You enter the castle through the cellar and go up staircases constructed inside the thick walls. Upstairs are a magnificent hall and some smaller tower rooms. In the attic is a small exhibit of objects found during restoration on the grounds and in the moat.
