Established in 1936 and since extended with a new wing, this was one of the first museums in Holland to devote itself entirely to contemporary art. It got its start due to local cigar manufacturer Henri van Abbe, who donated his collection of paintings to the city. Look for works by Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondriaan (Mondrian), Marc Chagall, Theo van Doesburg, and other big names in modern art. The work of acquisition continues, and the museum has frequent temporary exhibits of leading-edge art.
