This imposing, architecturally eclectic Victorian stone-and-shingle mansion, originally built for the family that owned the Bigelow carpet firm, is set amid acres of white pines on a rocky knoll above Route 16. It's about 1 mile north of North Conway. It wouldn't seem at all out of place in either the south of France or the moors of Scotland. Request a room in the regal original 1876 mansion if you can; another 10 units are housed in a comfortable but less elegant wing added in the 1950s.
