Don't expect to see big hotels or resorts on the North Fork. Instead, you'll find many motor inn-style spots dating from the 1950s; thankfully, the increased tourism of recent years has inspired some of these owners to renovate. One of the benefits of this part of the East End: You can actually stay right on the waterfront without remortgaging your own home.

You'll also find some fine B&Bs. In addition to the choices listed here, consider a stay at the light-drenched Shinn Estate Farmhouse, a 19th-century inn with modern decor and amenities, located on the Shinn Estate Vineyard, 2000 Oregon Rd., Mattituck (tel. 631/804-0367), or the waterfront Stirling House, 104 Bay Ave., Greenport (tel. 631/477-0654). Freddy's House, 1535 New Suffolk Rd., Cutchogue (tel. 631/734-4180), is a fully restored 18th-century farmhouse located on a working family-run farm. If you're in the market for a budget motel, try the old-school roadside Drosso's, 69125 Main Rd., Greenport (tel. 631/477-1334). While it's not on the water, it's a friendly place with an attached miniature golf course and outdoor snack bar.
