Sheppard's Hotel Restaurant & Bistro

This is one of the most affordable choices in the area for both food and lodging. The late James Herriot treated his last horse on these premises; now the Sheppard family has turned the complex into one of the finest lodging choices in the area. Operating out of an old stable block and granary (now restaurant and bistro, with well-furnished bedrooms overhead), a country atmosphere prevails, and the decor often includes nailed horse brasses on the beams. Many guests request the "fat bedroom," so named because of its oversize double bed. The private bathrooms are small, with shower stalls. Otherwise, corridor bathrooms are adequate for those who must share. All the buildings in the complex are grouped around a cobbled courtyard.
