The MACO, 2 1/2 blocks north of the zócalo, exhibits the work of contemporary artists, primarily from Oaxaca state (which has produced some of Mexico's most famous painters). It also books traveling exhibitions. A small bookstore is to your right as you enter. The 18th-century building housing the museum merits a visit for its own sake. It's called the Casa de Cortés, and some say that it was built by order of Hernán Cortez after he received the title of Marqués of the Valley of Oaxaca (in reality, it was built 2 centuries too late for that).
