The northeastern segment of the delta has been set aside as the Moremi Game Reserve, an 1,800-sq.-km (702-sq.-mile) expanse of wilderness extending across both wetland and dry terrain covering an estimated 20% of the Delta. This, the most popular national park in Botswana, is both scenically exquisite and dense with exciting game (it's sometimes referred to as the Predator Capital of Africa), most of them quite habituated to humans. But being a National Park, it also attracts its fair share of tourists, some of them on self-drive safaris from neighboring countries. So although you're paying top dollar, you may not feel as removed from civilization as you will in one of the private concessions that surround Moremi Game Reserve. These are southern Africa's most sought-after private reserves or concessions; most contain only a couple of small, private safari camps and offer a greater variety of safari activities than the park: Only camps outside the Moremi Game Reserve are allowed to have night game drives and walking safaris, or drive off designated roads to follow game. Concessions located in the south and east tend to have a greater density and variety of game sightings (worth noting if your time is limited, but not a deal breaker). Rates are almost always quoted in dollars and usually include transfers from Maun, but please check up front to be sure. Book as early as possible: These camps embody Botswana's prevailing tourism ethos of high-end and low volume, so in peak season, beds in sought-after camps are soon filled.
