Assuming you can afford it, there really is no question that the best place to stay when visiting a castle town is in the castle itself. Part of the national parador network, the hotel has just 16 guest rooms in one of the wings of the Palacio Real. It is a late Gothic structure with huge buttresses to support the thick hilltop walls and it fairly bristles with watchtowers. (The kings of Navarra were always at war with someone, usually the French, the Castilians, or the Aragonese.) The other 27 rooms are located in the 1963 addition, which emulates the Gothic style but is clearly modern. The castle evokes the days of Carlos III (“el Noble”) and his Castilian queen, Leonor de Trastámara, and two of the most romantic rooms (106 and 107) are named for them.
