In business since 1935, this downtown diner is a Northwest classic and is part of the Portland-based McMenamins brewpub empire. On the walls are old black-and-white photos of period logging activities (the cafe's name refers to the spar trees used for rigging cables and pulleys) and numerous colorful murals added when the spar became a McMenamins establishment. Breakfasts are some of the best in town (try the Fourth Avenue Mess). If it's genuine Olympia atmosphere you're looking for, this is the place.
