The building housing the theater was constructed in 1866, but the theater itself wasn't founded until 1907. The theater is an interesting example of Venetian-Moorish architecture as well as a major cultural institution in Osijek even though it was heavily damaged during Croatia's 1991 war with Serbia. Today it is completely restored to its former glory, though a McDonald's on its street level isn't exactly in keeping with historic fidelity. Many purists resent even the tiny sign advertising the Golden Arches establishment, but in fact McDonald's contributed a significant amount of money to the theater's restoration after the war. The theater stages productions from September to May.
