Ekeberg ReviewThe view from here of the Oslofjord was said to have inspired Edvard Munch in the creation of his masterpiece, The Scream. When the building, designed by Oslovian Lars Backer, was completed in 1929, it was said to be one of the foremost Functionalist buildings in Europe. By the end of the 1990s, the restaurant was closed and left to decay until its new owners took it over and completely renovated it. Today it is a modern building with the classic features retained from 1929. This complex contains several places to eat, including a bar/lounge, but Ekeberg is clearly the best place for dining. Most foreigners visit just for lunch, enjoying the fish soup, mussels steamed in wine, or the open sandwiches (one made with smoked trout). At night you can dine more festively, enjoying the marinated venison with juniper berry sorbet, or the date-glazed tuna with an apple vinaigrette for a starter, followed by such main courses as dill-baked salmon, or duck confit with a tarragon sauce.
