The Carmichael Inn and Spa ReviewThree blocks west of the Rideau Canal, this fetching 1901 retreat served as a Supreme Court judge's residence and a convent before being converted to an inn. It's named after one of Canada's famed Group of Seven painters, and the decor recalls their art as well as their early-20th-century life and times. All guest rooms are queen-bedded, furnished in unique mixes of antiques and reproductions; some also have gas fireplaces. A variety of treatments and packages are available in the inn's spa, including herbal and mud wraps, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, and reflexology. Before or after, guests can relax on couches in front of a marble fireplace or laze about in chairs on a veranda. This inn is extremely popular, so reserve both rooms and spa treatments at least a month in advance. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
