Frommer's Review
Rated as one of Panama's top bird-watching lodges for both its location and its quality of guides, the Burbayar is a pared-down lodge that envelops travelers in wild, natural surroundings. The Burbayar is best described as rustic adventure -- there's no electricity, for example, and showers produce only tepid water -- but the accommodations and the property are so well designed that rusticity feels 100% appropriate in such lush jungle surroundings. At night, kerosene lamps add an air of romance to the lodge. The Burbayar is a good bet for travelers seeking to delve into the rainforest without having to travel far from Panama City, and the price here is cheaper than that of its counterparts near the canal. Also, this is a relatively untrammeled area of Panama where the only other people you'll see are local Kuna Indians. The lodge comprises five thatched-roof, stylish cabins built of recycled local woods and palms (each cabin has a private bathroom) and a main dining/lounge area, strung along the ridge of a hill. Neatly manicured gardens, a tiny chapel, and a mini orchid farm add to the lodge's beauty. The Burbayar is frequented by bird-watching enthusiasts, yet it is ideal for any traveler who seeks to spend his days hiking through rainforest and relaxing in the afternoon in a hammock, listing to the sounds of nature. The lodge offers treks to the Caribbean coast, and to Lake Bayano for a boat ride to a Emberá Indian community. Meals are hearty and served family-style. The service at the Burbayar is a highlight; the Spanish owner, Iñaki, is enthusiastic and friendly and he's exceptionally attentive to his guests. The staff, as well as the lodge's guides, are warm and friendly, too, making guests feel like part of a family.
