Visiting The Arts Village -- Fiji's best cultural center is the Arts Village (tel. 345 0065; www.artsvillage.com), on the Queen's Road. Formerly known as the Pacific Harbour Culture Centre, it has been greatly spiffed up in recent years. Its centerpiece is a lakeside Fijian village, complete with thatched-roofs over the grand chief's bure and the tallest traditional temple in Fiji. Two tours depart every hour Monday to Saturday. The "island boat tour" wanders around the edges of the village, while the "island temple tour" takes you into the village for visits with Fijians working at carving, weaving, boat building, and other crafts. These cost F$15 (US$9) each for adults. I suggest getting here for a 9am tour, then watching the 11am show of traditional dancing and singing (and fire walking on Tues and Thurs). Admission is F$15 (US$9), or F$20 (US$12) when the fire walkers perform. Children 6 to 16 are charged half.
