If you go in high season, reserve well in advance -- Majorca's staggering number of hotels is still not enough to hold the August crowds. Some of our hotel recommendations are in El Terreno, the heart of local nightlife. Don't book into one of these hotels unless you like plenty of action, continuing until late at night.
Palma's suburbs, notably Cala Mayor, about 4km (2 1/2 miles) from the center, and San Agustín, about 5km (3 miles) from town, continue to sprawl. In El Arenal, part of Playas de Palma, there is a huge concentration of hotels. The beaches at El Arenal are quite good but have a Coney Island atmosphere.

This suburb of Palma lies immediately west of the center.
