In Palma

If you go in high season, reserve well in advance -- Majorca's staggering number of hotels is still not enough to hold the August crowds. Some of our hotel recommendations are in El Terreno, the heart of local nightlife. Don't book into one of these hotels unless you like plenty of action, continuing until late at night.

Palma's suburbs, notably Cala Mayor, about 4km (2 1/2 miles) from the center, and San Agustín, about 5km (3 miles) from town, continue to sprawl. In El Arenal, part of Playas de Palma, there is a huge concentration of hotels. The beaches at El Arenal are quite good but have a Coney Island atmosphere.

At Illetas

This suburb of Palma lies immediately west of the center.

At Portocolom

This hotel is on the eastern coast, reached by going east from Palma along C-717, and then cutting north at the signposted directions. It's 26km (16 miles) from Palma.

At La Bonanova

This magnificently situated hotel is directly west of Palma and south of the sprawling grounds of Castell de Bellver, the round hilltop castle crowning Palma.

At Palmanova

On the western coast, and west of Palma, this hotel enjoys a privileged position in Costa d'en Blanes. Count on a 10-minute drive from the center of Palma.
