Frommer's Review
Formerly the Holiday Inn, the owners of this hotel, part of the conglomeration that runs the Intercontinental Hotel and Gamboa Rainforest Resort, slapped on some paint, put the staff in new uniforms, and updated the guest rooms, relaunching in 2005 as the Crowne Plaza. It is now an elegant hotel catering to business travelers seeking high-end accommodations. This is where to go when you absolutely, positively need a good night's sleep: Rooms have double-paned windows, ergonomic beds with high-thread-count linens, and a basket of goodies such as eye masks and relaxation CDs. Plus the hotel has "Silence Zones," where there are no children or large groups. Though the Crowne Plaza is only a 10-minute walk from restaurants in El Cangrejo, it's located on a busy road adjacent to an abandoned building. Also, the staff could stand to smile more, but otherwise this is a very comfortable lodging choice, and website reservations made at least 2 weeks in advance can get you a double for $96 a night. Junior suites (called "executive rooms") have nice kitchenettes with full-size refrigerators and a bar counter, and cost just $15 more; likewise, some suites have balconies for $5 to $10 more, so inquire when booking. Price includes free airport shuttle.
