Contact the Paonia Ranger District of the Gunnison National Forest, 423 N. Rio Grande Ave. (tel. 970/527-4131) for additional information on outdoor recreation in the area.

Hiking

Some of the best hiking in the area is on the north rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, but there are also canal-side paths in town and plenty of trails on nearby national forest and other public lands. A good trail for a day hike is the Inter-Ocean Pass Trail, a moderate to strenuous 8-mile round-trip hike that gains 2,500 feet in altitude. Contact the Paonia Ranger District for information.

Fishing & Boating

The North Fork of the Gunnison River is the favored destination for anglers as well as tubers and paddlers. Contact the Paonia Ranger District for information.

Golf

Set amidst the stark landscape of high desert badlands, the acclaimed Devil's Thumb Golf Club, 30 miles west of Paonia in Delta (tel. 970/874-6262; www.deltagolf.org), charges $35 to $42 for 18 holes and $18 to $22 for 9 holes.
