Tips for Gay and Lesbian Travelers

France is one of the world's most tolerant countries toward gays and lesbians. "Gay Paree" boasts a large gay population, and an openly gay mayor, Bertrand Delanoë. The center of gay and lesbian life is Le Marais, particularly on Rues St-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie, des Archives, and Vieille-du-Temple. The annual Gay Pride March takes place on the last Sunday in June. Information and resources can be found in Paris's largest, best-stocked gay bookstore, Les Mots à la Bouche, 6 rue Ste-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie, 4e (tel. 01-42-78-88-30; www.motsbouche.com; Métro: Hôtel-de-Ville), which carries publications in both French and English. Tétu (www.tetu.com) and Préf (www.prefmag.com) are two magazines dedicated to gay life that have texts in English. La Dixième Muse (www.ladixiememuse.com) is the lesbian equivalent. In addition, both www.paris-gay.com and www.gayvox.com have updated listings about the gay and lesbian scene and events.
