For an inexpensive retreat in the 17th, this is as good as it gets. The staff long ago became accustomed to handling the problems their international guests might have. Terra-cotta tiles and bentwood furniture in the public areas make for an efficient, if not lushly comfortable, setting for breakfast. Though the climbing plants in the courtyard overshadow the guest rooms, the accommodations are appealing and, particularly those beneath the mansard's eaves, cozy. In 2000, management added about a dozen new rooms, thanks to the acquisition and refurbishment of a building next door. Throughout, rooms are modern, relatively small scale, and comfortable. About half of the private bathrooms contain tubs, the others showers.
