Built in the 19th century, this hotel is larger and more businesslike than many town house-style inns nearby. It basks in the reflected glow of Brazilian dissident Georges Amado, whose memoirs recorded his 2-year sojourn in one of the rooms. In 1997, the hotel completed a renovation and moved from two- to three-star status, and it has been continuously renovated since. The public areas are tasteful, with portraits and rich upholsteries. All but four rooms have tub/shower combinations. The improvements enlarged some rooms, lowering their ceilings and adding amenities, but retained old-fashioned touches such as wrought-iron balconies (on the fifth floor). Triple rooms have an extra bed and are suitable for families who share a private bathroom with tub and shower. Others have only shower, toilet, and sink. Sixth-floor rooms have views over the rooftops.
