Small, unpretentious, and inexpensive, this hotel has a difficult-to-detect front entrance (it's tucked within a cluster of more highly visible restaurants); a clientele that includes lots of musicians playing at the nearby jazz clubs; and a warm-toned decorative scheme loosely inspired by India, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Bedrooms are small, a bit battered, and artfully accessorized with musical instruments and framed paintings -- in some cases originals. Bathrooms are compact, with showers but not bathtubs and tile work. There's no elevator, so be prepared to climb as many as six flights of stairs. The largest room, and the only one with its own private terrace, is on the top floor.
