When Ian McPhee left Ian's Restaurant in Cambria and launched this one, it didn't take long for word to get out. McPhee's is worth the short drive to the historic town of Templeton. The converted old saloon features contemporary country decor, an open kitchen, and indoor and outdoor dining. The menu offers half a dozen appetizers such as an ancho-duck quesadilla or pan-roasted black bass with artichoke pesto, roasted red pepper sauce, and fingerling potatoes. Gourmet pizza, pasta, an amazing macadamia-crusted Alaskan halibut, and four varieties of tender, juicy steaks cooked to perfection round out the Americana-with-a-twist-style menu. Especially impressive are the prices -- it's rare that a restaurant "dedicated to great food and great service" offers the majority of its dishes for under $20.
