Queen's Head Inn Review

Lying 4km (2 1/2 miles) south of Penrith, this is a discovery from 1719, once the property of the Wordsworths. Today it is an inviting country pub and restaurant with overnight accommodations. It is found in the center of the village of Tirril, nestled on the edge of the Lake District National Park. Filled with bric-a-brac and memorabilia, the country inn is full of character. Expect oak beams, wooden settles, and even a roaring fire in the often chilly month of June. It's an atmosphere of hunting prints and horse brasses, along with farm tools and hunting horns. Most patrons come here to enjoy the Tirril beers on tap, although you may also enjoy wines from the family-owned vineyards. Good food has always been a tradition of the inn, and you can enjoy traditional British food here, including such noteworthy dishes as braised shoulder of Lakeland lamb in its own red-currant gravy. Local venison and pheasant appear in winter or locally smoked Ullswater trout in summer. The bedrooms are well maintained and most comfortable.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
