Near Perpignan, there are 34km (21 miles) of wide sandy beaches from Port Bacarès in the north down to Argelès-sur-Mer in the south, at which point the smooth sand gives way to the rocky coast and inlets of the Côte Vermeille, which continues to Spain.
The closest beach to Perpignan is Canet-en-Roussillon, which you can reach in about 35 minutes; to get there, take the No. 1 bus, which leaves regularly from Perpignan's SNCF railway station. Other nearby beach resorts include La Bacarès, Torreilles-Plage, and Sainte-Marie-Plage, all of which can be reached by bus from Perpignan. A car would be more useful if you want to head further south to the sleepier resort of St-Cyprien-Plage and the biggest and buzziest of them all, Argelès-Plage. However, there is an excellent bicycle path that connects Canet with Argelès. For information about the coastal resorts, contact the Pyrénées-Orientales Office de Tourisme, 16 av. des Palmiers, Perpignan (tel. 04-68-51-52-53; www.tourisme-pyreneesorientales.com).
