Most Perugian hotels are flexible about rates, which dive 40% to 50% below posted prices in the off season, so it always pays to ask. Reserve well in advance if you plan to visit during the booked-solid Umbria Jazz season (discussed earlier).
Promhotel Umbria is a local travel agency that can book you into one of more than 80 hotels in Perugia and throughout Umbria (tel. 0678-62-033 toll-free in Italy, or 075-500-2788; fax 075-500-2789; promhotelumbia@krenet.it).
Inexpensive -- Travelers watching their purse strings might want to forgo the more expensive choices above for one of two quiet hotels in the medieval streets east of Corso Vannucci. The Piccolo Hotel, Via L. Bonazzi 25 (tel. 075-572-2987), is a surprisingly pleasant place on a street parallel to the Corso with 12 very simple but clean double rooms going for around 35€ to 40€ ($46-$52) without bathroom or 43€ to 48€ ($56-$62) with bathroom (no credit cards). The 75€ ($98) doubles at Hotel Umbria, Via Boncambi 37 (tel./fax 075-572-1203), are considerably more of a climb back up to Corso Vannucci, but all 18 rooms have bathrooms and TVs, and modular furnishings. For info about the city's youth hostel, call tel. 075-572-2880.
