Villa di Monte Solare Review

It's hard to believe that a luxury hotel such as the Monte Solare would be found here, 25 minutes outside Perugia, in the hills far above civilization. Yet, when you climb up the gravel road, past the olive trees and 17th-century farmhouses, you realize that this is civilization: There are nightly classical music concerts in the villa's frescoed chapel, a huge range of spa treatments in a converted limonaia, and Michelin-worthy dinners in a jacket-and-tie restaurant led by local chef Nicola Fanfano. The main house is impeccably furnished in period chairs and paintings with ancient terra-cotta floors, while the surrounding farm buildings where most of the guests stay are fitted with ultramodern finishings, such as automatic lights for the bathroom. The hotel offers walking tours of the historic property and of the surrounding towns, as well as cycling tours and cooking classes. On rainy days you can spend time in the reading room on the top floor of the main house, which has books, games for the children, and sweeping views of the valley all the way to Lake Trasimeno.

Facilities:
Formal restaurant; bar; concierge; pool; smoke-free rooms; spa

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
