Frommer's Review
The clean lines of the sprawling JW Marriott could make a haiku poet out of anyone. Along the endless stretch of sand and roaring surf that makes up desolate Mai Khao Beach, this resort is a stylish (and eco-friendly) masterpiece. Anyone arriving at night will be awed by the flaming torches lining the steep drive. The airy lobby faces an enormous, black reflecting pool that sparkles with torchlight. The rooms are pretty average, except for a small meditation and reading corner with Thai cushions, in an alcove by the window. Higher rooms offer glorious views onto the sumptuous gardens and sea. If you have the cash, stay in one of the expansive suites. There is little by way of entertainment outside of the hotel, but the huge beach, pools, numerous restaurants and shops, and an ochre-walled, Moroccan-inspired spa keep guests happy. Due to the strong rip tides, sea swimming is not recommended, but there are sail boats. It is a 30-minute drive to the nearest tourist town, but the resort facilities are complete and few guests will find the need to leave, unless it's to take a bike ride to the next village or a kayak ride with nearby eco-outfit, John Grey. Service at the JW Marriott is impeccable and the dining exemplary.
