Grand Mercure La Veranda

This is, hands down, the best resort on the island. Resort bungalows are laid out around a small natural garden or oceanside; I highly recommend springing for the latter. Beachside bungalows come with the added bonus of hearing ocean waves as you drift off to sleep. They also have bigger bathrooms (equipped with separate tubs) than the other units. All bungalows come with private balconies and cozy four-poster beds dressed with luxurious feathery soft sheets. Art Deco is the theme throughout, though with a twist of modernity, such as bright purple walls offset by lime-green curlicue borders -- it's cheeky without being cheesy. The main house is a classic colonial mansion with a restaurant on the second floor serving a fine selection of French fare and sumptuous Vietnamese food at affordable prices. Dining at the resort is an excellent choice not only for the food, but also for the view and the relaxing ambience created by the sound of live jazz piano from the downstairs bar.
