The evocatively chic brick-vaulted basement here is devoted to fine wine coupled with solid, slightly refined Piemontese cooking. The nice variety of rich pasta dishes includes tarajin (Piedmont's answer to tagliatelle) topped with a rich lamb sauce, and fettucine di farro (noodles made from the barleylike grain emmer rather than wheat) tossed with pesto and served with potatoes and beans. The secondi are meaty: veal steak with aromatic herbs, rabbit cooked in red wine, and duck breast in a black-olive paste.

Up on the ground floor is the busy Umberto Notte bar (open evenings only), one of Alba's few late-night scenes, dispensing wines by the glass, from 1€ ($1.30). This is a fine place to sample the produce of the local vineyards as well as wines from all over the world.
