Within the town itself, attractions are mostly of the commercial kind (movie theater, mini-golf, go-karts), with the exception of Woodland Lake Park at the east end of Pinetop. But you don’t have to go far outside town to find sites of interest.

In 1870, the U.S. government established Fort Apache in the Arizona highlands just south of modern-day Pinetop. Today, the town is called Whiteriver, and it lies within the Fort Apache Reservation, just south of Pinetop-Lakeside. In Whiteriver, approximately 22 miles south of Pinetop on Ariz. 73, the Apache Cultural Center & Museum (www.wmat.us/wmaculture.html; tel. 928/338-4625) stands on the grounds of the Fort Apache Historic Park, a collection of more than 20 historic buildings that have been carefully restored. Inside a log building known as General Crook’s Cabin, there’s a museum with small but informative exhibits on Apache culture. Down a short trail you’ll find a re-creation of a traditional Apache village. The center is open Monday through Friday (plus Saturdays in summer) from 8am to 5pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students, and free for children 7 and under.

Also in the reservation nearby, the Kinishba Ruins is a 500-room pueblo ruin nearly 800 years old. The Spanish explorer Coronado visited here when he passed through in search of the Seven Cities of Cíbola. Look for the ruins off a marked dirt road 7 miles west of Whiteriver on Ariz. 73.

It’s open daily round-the-clock, at the junction of Ariz. 73 and Ariz. 260, about 4 miles east of Pinetop-Lakeside.
