Introduction to Playa del Carmen

Cruise ships regularly discharge passengers to soak up the eclectic beach town scene in Playa del Carmen, a laid-back city on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. You may be in Mexico, but Playa has much more of a European feel to it -- many of the beachfront all-inclusive megaresorts are run by Europeans, topless sunbathing is nonchalantly tolerated (it's illegal in other parts of Mexico), and tacos aren't the only thing on the menu. Drag yourself away from the resorts to discover ancient Mayan culture and a colorful underwater world.

Beaches

Submerge your toes in white sand and sip an umbrella drink, stopping occasionally to frolic in Playa's turquoise water. You can dive or snorkel through the cenotes (underwater caves) at Hidden World Cenotes. Spend an afternoon fishing or boating at the marina Puerto Aventuras, or arrange for a horseback ride on the beach through Rancho Punta Venado.

Things to Do

Go in search of Mayan culture with a drive south to the white-washed ruins of the ancient cities of Tulum and Cobá. A short ferry ride to the nearby island of Cozumel puts you in putting distance of the 18-hole Cozumel Country Club golf course -- just watch out for the blue crabs and crocodiles who have made it their home. Take a day trip to nature park Xel-Ha and swim with dolphins.

Eating and Drinking

Fill up on Argentinean-prepared steak one day and noodles the next, making the most of this city's international mix. For a taste of old Playa, try Yucatecan specialty tik-n-xic fish with achiote and bitter-orange sauce cooked in a banana leaf, in a casual setting right on the beach. Mayan cuisine gets an innovative twist in dishes like Mexican-style fruit salad with lime juice and dried powdered chili.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Playa's La Quinta (Quinta Avenida) attracts everyone at night, with browse-worthy shops and plenty of bars and restaurants studded along this pedestrian promenade. Sample a range of Mexico's national spirit -- tequila, of course -- or call into Blue Parrot, a local institution known for its live rock acts and mixed crowd; the beachside location doesn't hurt either.
