Planning a TripGetting There Served by three train stations, Pompei is easily accessible by public transportation. A few FS-Trenitalia trains (tel. 892021 in Italy; www.trenitalia.it) stop in Pompei FS rail station in the center of town, but service is much more frequent on the Circumvesuviana railway (tel. 800-053939; www.vesuviana.it) between Naples, Sorrento, and Poggiomarino/Sarno. On the Sorrento line, get off at Pompei-Villa dei Misteri, only a few yards from the Porta Marina entrance to the archaeological area. If you take the Poggiomarino line, get off at Pompei-Santuario, in the center of Pompei, only steps from the sanctuary and a couple hundred yards from the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance to the site. The ride from Naples takes 45 minutes and costs 2.40€; from Sorrento it's 30 minutes and 1.90€. Taking a taxi from Naples is a good alternative (the official flat rate for a round-trip to Pompei is 90€, and includes a 2-hr. wait at the ruins), or take a car service from any location. From Naples, you can also sign up for a guided tour. By car, take the autostrada A3 and exit at POMPEI OVEST or POMPEI EST. Follow the brown signs for POMPEI SCAVI.
