Grand Hotel Kronenhof

This is the grandest hotel in town and has been run by the same family since the 1850s. In spite of its age, it's completely modern, having undergone a massive renovation in 2007. Set in the center of the Pontresina, behind iron gates and a circular driveway, the Kronenhof is decorated with Corinthian columns and vaulted, frescoed ceilings. Its oldest section dates from 1848; the impressive details are from 1898 and include such baroque accessories as gilt, baby-pink cherubs, alluring nymphs, dark-wood pine, restored murals, and even the original parquet floors. The midsize to spacious bedrooms are individually decorated with traditional pieces; others are in soothing pastels. One of the most spectacular renovations is an elegant spa, among the best in the Engadine. Children are especially welcome here; there's even a kiddie restaurant for them, plus other activities.
