Addo Park Rest Camp Review

This is a great budget option, with cabins (sleeping two, shared ablutions) for as little as R450. Better still are the comfortable self-catering cottages and rondawels with bush views -- often with elephants wandering through. All units (except for some of the forest cabins) are en suite, though you need to specify whether you want a semi- or fully-equipped kitchen or shared cooking facilities. Unit nos. 1 to 6 (two-bed with communal kitchens) have views of the waterhole, as do unit nos. 7 and 8 (six-bed guesthouses with kitchens and TV); while unit nos. 17 to 24 and 29 to 32 have good park views. A restaurant serves basic, filling meals -- chicken, fish, steaks (including kudu and ostrich), and a few traditional dishes like umcabosi, a mix of spinach and pap (maize porridge). Best of all, if you're keen on dawn drives, you can be in the game-viewing area within minutes of dragging yourself out of bed. Note: Camp Matyholweni (tel. 041/468-0916), a new rest camp with comfortable cottages, is now open at the Southern entrance to the park, much closer to the beach. But you will have to drive to the main viewing section to see the Big 5 -- though elephants and other animals are expected to be released in the area by late 2009.

Facilities:
Restaurant; fuel station; pool; tennis; underground animal viewing hide

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
