Frommer's Review
The reason most guests love this reserve is the real sense of being in some remote outpost; it's a mere 80-minute drive from P.E. but (like newcomer Samara) is farther north and far deeper into the Karoo desert than the other Eastern Cape reserves. Equally important is the rate: Given the standards of accommodations and facilities, this is one of the best-value Big 5 lodges in the Eastern Cape, particularly in winter when the rates drop. Though it's unlikely to make inroads in international magazine selections, the lodge is tasteful enough, very comfortable, and personally managed by hands-on owners Gill and Craig Cullingworth. Comprising only seven thatched suites (large, with private veranda; views from bathtub) in a heavenly landscape, the experience is both rejuvenating and totally relaxing. Besides tracking the Big 5 on morning and evening game drives through the 6,000-hectare (14,800-acre) reserve, a highlight is the "walk and stalk" safaris, in which you track, among other animals, cheetahs, arguable the most intriguing of the big cats. Book now, before discovery hikes prices.
