Blaauwbosch Private Game Reserve Review

The reason most guests love this reserve is the sense of being in some remote outpost; it's a mere 80-minute drive from P.E., but it's farther north, closer to the Karoo desert than the other Eastern Cape reserves (excluding Samara). Equally important is the rate: Given the standards of accommodations and facilities, this is one of the best-value Big 5 lodges in the Eastern Cape (compared to the big-name Shamwari, Samara, and Kwandwe), particularly in winter, when rates drop. Though it's unlikely to make inroads in international magazine selections, the lodge is tasteful enough and very comfortable, and although its new owners do not live on the property, manager Warrick Barnard will make you feel very much at home. Comprising seven thatched suites (large, with private veranda; views from bathtub) in a heavenly landscape, the experience is both rejuvenating and relaxing. The new, exclusive Kaai's Camp has a gorgeous mountain setting with four suites offering extra luxuries and outdoor showers. Besides tracking the Big 5 on game drives through the 5,000-hectare (12,350-acre) reserve, a highlight is the "walk and stalk" safaris, in which you track cheetahs, arguably the most intriguing of the big cats.

Facilities:
Dining area; bar; lounge; babysitting; game drives and foot tracking; pool; free Wi-Fi

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
