Gorah Review

Grasslands, game, and big skies stretch out before you in delicious, deep silence at Gorah, punctuated only by animal grunts and the sounds of grass being chewed (clearly audible through the canvas walls of the 11 elegant thatched tents at 2am). Small wonder that this is one of my top three safari destinations in the Eastern Cape (the others being Kwandwe and Samara). The lack of electricity at Gorah (it is solar powered and has strong green credentials) adds to the experience: The camp comes into its own at night, when winking lanterns and candles illuminate the colonial-style lodge but are no match for the dazzle of stars overhead. A waterhole a stone's throw from the lodge veranda provides down-time game-viewing of exceptional quality; drives will top up any sightings you may have missed. This is a true retreat, and the care and attention to detail brought to every aspect of your experience, combined with the exceptional surroundings, make it hard to beat.

Facilities:
Dining areas; lounges; boma; horseback rides; library; pool; free Wi-Fi

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
