Housed in a dove-gray, 1884 Italianate home in Portland's lovely West End, this winning B&B is decorated with whimsy and elegance. Look for bold wall paintings by a local artist and eclectic antique furniture collected and tastefully arranged throughout. Each of the eight rooms is distinct, with painted floors and faux-marble woodwork. Most have gas fireplaces; the best room might be the one in the carriage house, which comes with its own private terrace (sliding doors lead out to a little garden) and a fireplace. Sit-down breakfasts are served in a cheery dining room.
