This bold, modern museum, designed by I. M. Pei & Partners in 1983, features selections from its own fine collections as well as touring exhibits. Particularly strong in American artists with Maine connections, including Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, and Edward Hopper, it has good displays of early American furniture and crafts. Colby College and the museum share the Joan Whitney Payson Collection, which includes fine works by Renoir, Degas, and Picasso. A recent addition to the complex is the restored McLellan-Sweat House, a stunning 1801 Federal-style building attached to the modern wing, where the museum was once entirely housed.
