Frommer's Review
Widely regarded as one of the most elaborate Victorian brownstone homes ever built in the U.S., this mansion (also known as the Morse-Libby House) is often mentioned in books on American architecture. It's a remarkable display of high Victorian style. Built between 1858 and 1863 for a Maine businessman who had made his fortune in New Orleans, the towering, slightly foreboding home is a prime example of Italianate style. Inside, craftsmen and artisans have gone to town with murals and other detailing. The decor is somber, but the home offers an engaging look into a bygone era. It's a must for architecture buffs. The weeks leading up to Christmas bring an annual round of special tours and events.
