Situated in one of Portland's less elegant neighborhoods, Bella Cucina sets an inviting mood with rich colors, stylized fish sculptures, soft lighting, and pinpoint spotlights over the tables that carve out alluring islands of light. The menu changes frequently but dances deftly between rustic Italian and regional, with options such as a robust cioppino with haddock and lobster, and a mélange of veal, pork, and chicken served with a prosciutto and mushroom ragout. Vegan entrees are also always offered. About half the seats at Bella Cucina are kept open for walk-ins, so take a chance and stop by even if you don't have reservations. The wine selection is good, and there's free parking evenings in a lot behind Joe's Smoke Shop (just off Congress St.).
