Frommer's Review
Beale Street BBQ owner Mark Quigg once operated a takeout grill on Route 1 outside Freeport, but he chucked that life when notables such as author Stephen King got wind of his cooking; soon he was catering movie shoots, joining forces with his two brothers, and the Quiggs have never looked back. Of all the 'cue joints in Maine, this is my favorite, with its appealing roadhouse atmosphere, friendly staff, and great smoked meats. Though I like everything here -- check the board for intriguing daily specials, which usually include a fish preparation as well as Creole or Cajun offerings -- I usually order the $15 barbecue sampler (subtitled "All You Really Need to Know About BBQ"). This entitles you to a choice of pulled pork, chicken, or beef brisket (go with the brisket); ample sweet and crunchy cornbread; a half slab of ribs; a quarter chicken; and delicious spicy smoked links that remind me of East Texas, plus a mound of barbecue beans and coleslaw. Two people could comfortably split it. This location, in South Portland's commercial Mill Creek and Knightville neighborhoods, is a bit hard to find (it's almost beneath the Casco Bay Bridge). There's another fancier location (tel. 207/442-9514) at 215 Water St. in the gritty maritime town of Bath, a short drive north on Route 1.
