A 15-minute drive from downtown Portland, the Black Point is a Maine classic. Situated on 9 acres on a point with views along the coast both north and south, the inn was built as a summer resort in 1873, in an area enshrined in some of the work of noted painter Winslow Homer. Sixty rooms are in the main shingled lodge; the others are spread about four cottages. Even the smaller rooms are generously sized, with enough space for two wingback chairs and a desk. The cottage units have more of a rustic feel; my pick would be the Sprague Cottage, with its flagstone floors in the common area and five rooms with private balconies, some with ocean views. Note that the inn is popular for weddings on summer weekends.
