Located in an unusually handsome brick home constructed in 1821, this is one of Portland's more desirable small inns. The extra touches are welcome throughout, from working wood-burning fireplaces in all guest rooms but one to the richly paneled billiards room. Especially appealing is room 1, with a sitting area and private deck, and room 2, with high ceilings and abundant morning light. The inn is located at the edge of the Spring Street Historic District, a 10-minute walk from downtown. It's popular for weddings, so if you're in search of a quiet weekend retreat, ask if anything is planned.
