The Percy Inn, at the edge of Portland's West End, is housed in a pair of handsome early-19th-century brick town houses in an up-and-coming but not-quite-there-yet area. Close to good restaurants, it's about a 15-minute walk to the Old Port. Guest rooms in the main building are reached via a narrow, twisting staircase. The Henry W. Longfellow Room has wonderful random-width floorboards, a small snack room with fridge, and a corner sitting area with marble cafe table. In 2001, the inn expanded into the adjacent town house; at 1,000 square feet, Pine Suite 1 is the largest unit, a two-bedroom suite in a former art gallery. For families, another two-bedroom suite is in the carriage house. Nice touches abound: All rooms have weather radios, CD players, VCRs, complimentary soft drinks, and coolers with beach blankets for day trips.
