Hotel Le Sirenuse

This huge red-and-white 18th-century villa with terraced floors overlooking the bay is a picturesque sight -- you may have seen it featured in the film Only You with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, Jr. Just above the harbor, it was the residence of the Marchesi Sersale family until 1951, and the public spaces are palatial. Guest rooms are large and bright, with vaulted ceilings, antiques, hand-painted tile floors, and fine fabrics; all have private terraces and luxurious bathrooms. Most rooms have priceless views of the bay. The hotel's swimming pool is perched on a terrace, and a state-of-the-art health club with an attached Aveda spa offers further relaxation. The buffet breakfast here is lavish, and the restaurant La Sponda (closed 3 weeks in Mar and 3 weeks in Nov; reservations are required) is highly recommended for meals. Children 6 and under are not accepted in the hotel from May 1 through September 30, or at the restaurant for dinner.
