Many fine private art galleries showing contemporary work by Czech and other artists are in central Prague, within walking distance of Staromestské námestí. Although their primary interest is sales, most welcome browsing.

As for public museums and galleries, note that many museums are closed on Monday.

Saving Money on Entrance Fees -- Prague's museums, especially the Jewish Museum, the Castle complex, and the holdings of the National Gallery, are becoming more and expensive every year. Be sure to take advantage of discounted senior or student admission fees if you qualify. Also, many museums offer a heavily discounted "family" rate that normally covers two adults and at least one or two children. Another option, if you think you might be visiting a lot of museums, is to prepurchase a Prague Card. This pass is valid for 4 days and allows you to visit more than 50 top attractions in the city, including Prague Castle (but unfortunately not the sites within the Jewish Museum complex). The price is 790Kc for adults and 550Kc for students under 26. You can buy it at the PIS information centers at the Old Town Hall at Staromestské nám. 1 or at Rytírská 31, Prague 1. National Gallery Sites

The national collection of fine art is grouped for display in a series of venues known collectively as the National Gallery (Národní Galerie). Remember that this term refers to several locations, not just one gallery.

The National Gallery's holdings are eclectic and range from classic European masters at the Sternberský palác across from the main gate to Prague Castle to modern Czech and European works from the 20th and 21st centuries at the Veletrzní palác in the neighborhood of Holesovice in Prague 7. Other important museums include a collection of 19th century Czech art at St. George's Convent in the Prague Castle complex and the extensive holdings of medieval and Gothic art at St. Agnes Convent near the river in Old Town.
