Getting There & Departing

By Car -- North or south from Highway 200, take coastal Highway 175 inland to Puerto Angel. The road is well marked with signs to Puerto Angel. From Huatulco or Puerto Escondido, the trip should take about an hour.

By Taxi -- Taxis are readily available to take you to Puerto Angel or Zipolite Beach for a reasonable price (about $3/£1.50 to or from either destination), or to the Huatulco airport or Puerto Escondido (about $50/£25).

By Bus -- There are no direct buses from Puerto Escondido or Huatulco to Puerto Angel; however, numerous buses leave Puerto Escondido and Huatulco for Pochutla, 11km (7 miles) north of Puerto Angel. Take the bus to Pochutla, and then switch to a bus going to Puerto Angel. If you arrive in Pochutla from Huatulco or Puerto Escondido, you may be dropped at one of several bus stations that line the main street; walk 1 or 2 blocks toward the large sign reading POSADA DON JOSE. The buses to Puerto Angel are in the lot just before the sign.

Orientation

The town center is only about 4 blocks long, oriented more or less east-west. There are few signs in the village, and, off the main street, much of Puerto Angel is a narrow sand-and-dirt path. The navy base is toward the west end of town, just before the creek crossing toward Playa Panteón (Cemetery Beach).

Puerto Angel has several public (Ladatel) telephones that use widely available prepaid phone cards. The closest bank is Bancomer in Pochutla, which changes money Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm, Saturday from 9am to 1pm. The correo (post office), open Monday through Friday from 9am to 3:30pm, is on the curve as you enter town.

Important Travel Note

Although car and bus hijackings along Highway 200 north to Acapulco have greatly decreased (thanks to improved security measures and police patrols), you're still wise to travel this road only during the day.
